  1. QUESTION:
I sprained my ankle and the swelling wont go down, what do i do ?
Well i sprained my ankle on saturday and today is wednesday, all the pain is gone so i can walk on it normally but its still swollen. And ive read that it should only take 2 days for the swelling to go down and its been 5 days and it hasnt gone down yet. What do i do ?
Thank you for all the help ! :D

    • ANSWER:
It might be a little break as this is a classic symptom.
Try ice and arnica pills to take swelling down.
Go and see your doctor and have Xrays done if you haven’t done yet.

  2. QUESTION:
I sprained my ankle months ago and theres a lump on my foot that wont go down?
Ok so I slipped on ice about 3 months ago and sprained my ankle. My foot swelled up and i couldn’t walk for a couple days. I never went to the doctor to get it checked because i’ve sprained my ankle before and it healed just fine on its own.

Well my foot is fine except a certain part on the top of my foot wont go back to normal.

    http://img263.imageshack.us/i/footbk.jpg/

the circled area is the part that is bigger than it used to be. when i flex my foot or arch it, it just bulges out and looks gross. my other foot is normal. What could this be and is there a way to fix it? Its been months now.

Also, what is that area called anyway? I can’t find it on google.

    • ANSWER:
Don’t worry about it!! They won’t stay that big forever. But they will stay for a while. I have them on both my feet. Basically swelling is the area you hit filling up with liquid (puss) and that limp is where the puss hasn’t gone yet. It will stay for a while though. It always does there.

so it has been sprained for 5 days.
At the hospital they gave me a air cast and crutches,
they told me to try and walk on it.

    Also, my leg is swelled.
    THANK YOU SO MUCH !
    omg, haha
i forgot to write my question in that huge explination i wrote.
    my question is :
is it normal for it to be swelled like that after so many days?
or am i just being paranoid?

    • ANSWER:
      i’ve broken over 15 bones
      and sprained a whole bunch
i find that with sprains there is a lot more swelling than with breaks.

best thing is to put ice on for 20 mins, then heat for 20 mins.

it’s soothe the pain and take away the swelling.
you’re lucky that you got an air cast, i always had to tough it out.

it’s good to walk it out as much as possible.
if the swelling is still there in a week and a half from the accident
      consult your doctor.

also, make sure the air cast isn’t too tight.

      best of luck!

Could this be a ankle sprain?
Well yesterday I went ice skating and as soon as I took off my ice skate my ankle started hurting. It got worse while I was sleeping I can walk on it but I have pain when putting weight on it. I only fell once when I crashed into the wall. But I dont remember it hurting at all? The pain is kinda around the ball thingy that connects your foot and ankle. I dont know what I did. I dont know about this but the only way I stopped was crashing into the wall but that didnt hurt at all? The pain is on the inner side and when i move my foot up or down or in circles it hurts. Its not swelling or bruised at all either wich is really worrying me, it doesnt looked deformed or discoloured in anyway? Oh and my mom wont take me to the docter :/ she never does… But all help is needed!

  11. QUESTION:
    Sprained ankle question?
About 3 weeks ago, I got a grade 2 sprained ankle from falling down the stairs. I couldnt put pressure on it, let alone walk. I was on crutches for a week and then had an ankle brace (which im still using).
after lots of Physical therapy, I started walking by the end of the week.
I went to camp for a week and limited my walking. I iced it a few times throughout the day. And by the end of the week, it was looking better (not bruised as bad).
Every morning, I wake up and my ankle is stiff and sore. But besides that, my ankle was looking and feeling better. I thought that because my ankle was feeling better, I would be able to go to Disney World for a few days. I wore supported shoes with an ace wrap (ankle brace wont fit in shoe) and walked through the parks. By mid-day, my ankle had stabbing pain with each step. I put my ankle brace on with some crocs and continued to walk around. It hurt a bit, but after about an hour, it went numb and I could no longer feel the pain. It was like this every day at Disney.
I got home and iced it for a long time and by the next day it was feeling a lot better, still a little sore though.
My ankle is still sore and semi-swollen. I still cant run and my ankle goes to the side when I walk. I go to Physical therapy once a week to help strengthen my ankle, but it only seems to be helping a little bit. I thought that it would be better by now.
Did I make it worse by going to camp and Disney World? How long till my ankle will be completely better and I can run and do sports again? How long till I can be off the ankle brace?
    Please no rude comments!

    • ANSWER:
yes, you made it much worse when you went to disney world. you might have to start all over from the beginning of therapy. you might just be a slow healer. everyone heals at different paces. do exactly what the dr. tells you and nothing more until you ankle is fully healed. you don’t want this turning into a permanent problem.

  12. QUESTION:
    Help recovering from sprained ankle?
Hi I injured my ankle at basketball training 2 weeks ago. Dr says its the ligaments (Ive had xrays and ct scan). Anyway I did it by jumping and then changing direction as soon as i hit the ground. My ankle went all the way to the left, then all the way to the right and then back to the middle. When it went back to the middle it gave out and I collapsed.

The pain was INTENSE. It went from my ankle to half way up my leg and I could not move my leg at all for about 5 minutes. Anyway the pain died down a bit and i tried to walk it off but the pain was pretty bad. When I got home I couldnt walk at all. Dr did ct scan and xrays and says its ligament damage.. It was put in a backslab for a week and I had crutches.

Ive been icing it, taking pain medication, elevating it, wearing a brace and trying to ease back into exercise.

Ankle still wont fit into a shoe because of swelling and I cant move it into a running motion. I missed a game today and want to get back ASAP.

    What can I do?
About 15-20 minutes after I did it we decided it wasnt broken and that I would try to walk it off…. Managed to hobble around a bit. Took me about an hour to drive home and once I got out of the car I could not walk again. Couldnt put weight on it for a week.

It came out in a massive bruise from up my leg to my toes. Most of the bruising is gone now but I cant get rid of the swelling.

I can handle the pain (its getting less every day) but the swelling is stopping me playing basketball.
Oh yeah and the Doctor said my ankle would let me know when it was ready to play basketball again. I think its ready now but its so stiff from the swelling.

    • ANSWER:
yes I know it took me 3 weeks to fit into my shoes again.. so be patient a little longer xxx

hurt my ankle in basketball-ma wont take me to the dr?

On friday at skool i was at the nurses office alot. I had alot of ice put on my ankle and it got worse during the day as i walke don it. I got to use the elevator (funn!) and so that helped with the stairs. I went home and sat down and watched tv with ice on my ankle for the rest of the day when i got home from skool. Today (sat) it still has a sharp pain worse then friday.

My mom said she would take me to the minute clinic today if it got worse, but since money is tight right now, i can tell she is doing everything to avoid taking me. MY ankle is a little swollen and somewhat a differnt color. I am trying not to walk but its hard to do cuz my mom keeps making me do stuff around the house.

Today i was drinking at a buddys house, we had been tackling each other back and forth, he got me good, i rolled on my left foot with flip flops on, heard two pops, and searing pain. not unbearable, but it hurt. It still does. it hurts to walk and the pain comes back in flashes. It has limited mobility and standing time without too much pain.

its also swollen in the ankle area, and my left foot wont go back as far as the right one (imagine standing on the tips of your toes like a ballerina but do it sitting down thats what im talking about.)

    • ANSWER:
I was at gymnastics, and i did a back hand spring and landed like you did, i heard pops and it hurt to walk on it . it was swollen big time and it felt a little better by the hour, but i still went to the doctor and they told me it was swollen, so i think its sprained. you have everything i had, and it was sprained.

i sprained my ankle during track practice yestreday
or at least i think its sprained

i fell while sprinting and i had to walk a mile back to school and i went home and i couldnt put any pressure on it.

i put ice on it and the swelling went down but he pain wont go away

    i can barely even walk

Take some motrin, it will help reduce the swelling and stop the pain. Keep it elevated with intermittent ice for 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off. Do this for only three days. If it doesn’t feel better by Monday you should go to the doctor for an x-ray.

  18. QUESTION:
Sprained ankle 3 weeks ago, and it gets swollen during day, but when I wake up it is regular size. Why?
I sprained it 3 weeks ago. And Im concerned there is something really wrong with it that time wont heal. Because it was progressing for the first 2 weeks then this last week it seemed to stop healing in anyway. It gets swollen during the day then in the morning when I wake up and the morning hours it is as close to regular size as ive seen since i hurt it.

Could it be a broken vessel that keeps the blood from flowing, thats why it gets swollen down there when im up on my feet?

and if so, is there a way to heal vessels or anything liek that? Is there a timetable for healing those?

    Or is it something else?

    please help

as i dont have insuirance so i cant afford to go to a doc.

    • ANSWER:
it takes a while for a sprained ankle to heal.
the reason that it’s happening is because your always on your feet putting pressure on your ankle. at night when your legs are elevated and your not putting pressure on your ankle it’ll get better.
i dont think that it’s a broken vessel.
you should rest your foot and try to stay off it. Apply the PRICE method. Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.
      it’ll help your healing.
try to keep your ankle higher than your heart (put it on top of a table, pillo if your laying down, anything) it’ll help alot.
the ice should keep the swelling down. wrap it up so that you don’t move your ankle as much as you normally would.
it should get better in time.

  19. QUESTION:
    Sprained or broken ankle?
I was playing basketball and when I came down on it I rolled it on another person’s foot. It hurt but I decided to keep playing. While still playing within 8 mins I went up for the basketball and when I came down (on my front toes) I felt a crunch. There is swelling and a small circular bruise on the side of the outer leg (1 inch on top from ankle). I haven’t walked on it and wont go to doctor till monday. Can someone tell me if it’s broken or sprained (I’m thinking there’s a slight closed fracture)? I haven’t walked on it since the incident and will not till I get to the doctor.

I checked webmd.com but it couldn’t differentiate between the two. Also can someone tell me exactly what to do in this case (i.e. don’t walk on it for so and so long).

    • ANSWER:
From the experience of having a sprain and a broken bone…if you hear a crunch that’s a good sign of a fracture. Also between the 2 for me…the sprain hurt much worse than the break. Swelling and bruising is typical for both. However which ever one it may be you have got to stay off of it. The more you use it the more you damage it. Try propping it up and putting some ice packs on also take ibuprofen for the pain and swelling. Then get to the doctor as soon as possible.

    • ANSWER:
I’ve sprained my right ankle 4 times and I have broken it once. The last sprain that I had I didnt go to the doctor b/c I already knew what he would say.

“Stay off your feet for a couple days and ice for every other hour and to elevate it. Ibprofen works well.”

Also by any chance you have a walking boot you should wear that so that it heals correctly. If you don’t I’d go to Walgreens or Walmart and buy an ankle brace. It will most likely heal after about 6 weeks.

To help strengthen your ankle and help with its movement you can trace the alphabet with your big toe in the air. Also you can sit in a chair and throw a hand towel on the floor. you have to keep your foot in the ground and bring the towel back towards you by scrunching your toes. This helps strengthen it as well

      hope you feel better

  22. QUESTION:
How long until I can play sport again after ankle ligament tear?
Hi, sprained my ankle pretty badly exactly 3 weeks ago. The bruising and swelling were intense. The swelling has gone down a lot but is still noticably huge. Had xray, ct scan and ultrasound and have a suspected complete rupture of the anterior-talofibular ligament.

I can walk but not very well. The ankle feels a bit floppy and theres pain when I try to walk without a limp.

Im starting physio tomorrow and seeing a surgeon next week. Hopefully I wont need the surgeon.

Anyone have any idea how long until I would be able to run again?

Im willing to do physio 7 days a week if it helps.

Im hoping to get back in 6 weeks…. which would make it 9 weeks since I injured it. Is that do-able?

    Any help would be great.

    • ANSWER:
Wait until you finish your physio, see the surgeon to get his impressions, then wait and see what the doctors say. If you attempt to use your injured ankle too soon, you’ll only do further damage to it. I know it must be difficult, but you need to just wait and let your doctors tell you when your ankle is healed enough to play sports.

  26. QUESTION:
My horse wont put weight on his foot, PLEASE HELP?
I have a thoroughbred that the ferrier ( a new one) clipped too short about a month ago. He was lame and I kept him in his stall for a day or two until he started to stalk up. Bad swelling on his left “ankle” and front “ankle”. <-- back ground information to initial problem.

2 weeks later he is up and running like nothing happened. This past weekend, I went away for the day and came home to find that he broke out of the pen, the police were called, they shined flashlights in his eyes, he took off down the road. They got him back to the barn.

Now my horse is once again lame. The difference with this time is that he is really favoring his right leg, we have swelling in the knee and the front right "ankle" and the back right "ankle". He "hops" around on his front right hoof and will not put it flat on the ground, it looks like when someone sprains their ankle and is trying to walk, they put as little pressure as possible on it. I cleaned his hoof out, saw nothing, he let me poke and prod it, his knee is warm I tried to feel the bones but couldn't get a good idea with the swelling. He let me try to make his hoof flat in my hand.

Any suggestions?? I am new in my area and I am trying to find one ASAP but many aren't taking any new clients.

    • ANSWER:
I am sorry for your situation. Even the best of fences come down, and we have a problem in our area with drunks opening the gates and watching the horses run in the night. Not pleasant!

I can’t tell who you are trying to contact, a vet or a farrier, but you need a vet. An injury from running is more likely to be a hyper extension injury (sprain) and the swelling you see in the fetlocks (ankles) are gravity fed from higher up, in knee or suspensory ligament or the flexor tendon.

While you are trying to get a vet, you need to be cold hosing these legs for 15 min twice a day. Keep calling vets, and get one that will come out within as short a time as possible. Keep the horse in the stall, but hand walk for 3-5 min twice a day (to and from the hose). He is going to stock up (stalk as you call it) and the cold hosing will help. He will need to be wrapped, but unless you are an expert wrapper with standing bandages and no-bow padding, you can do more damage than you prevent. The cold water will go a long way to help decrease the swelling.

This will not be a fast or cheap fix, but you need help. While you are not riding, how about you get a book on horse conformation so you can communicate clearly with your vet. Vets often are less likely to rush out to an owner when they have not educated themselves on horse health and parts of the horse. They know that the horse is going to need care by you, and if you cannot even name the part that is injured, how are you going to do with the sometimes complicated treatment? This is not meant as a rant, but learning the parts of a horse isn’t hard. I did it when I was 6, so I trust that you can too.

  27. QUESTION:
I fell and hurt my ankle 9 weeks ago. How long is it going to take to be back to normal??? :-(?
I had xrays taken the same day and they thought there might be an avulsion fracture. So I was given a boot cast and crutches. Went to see an orthopod and he cam back saying it was a bad sprain and to wear the boot for a further 3 weeks.

Then started physio which helped slightly but still could not walk properly.

Have now been to a specialist again after 9 weeks and he has put my in a stirrup. X-rays have been taken again and am having more physio. I cannot put full pressure on the injured foot/ankle. Can only walk at a snails pace and only for about 30 mins before the swelling starts and the pain really hurts.

Am using a dyno band at home to excercise the ankle and trying to go onto “tip toes”. I cannot do this at all on the injured ankle/foot. It’s as if my brain and foot are not comunicating at all. I cannot do squats, this hurts the front of the ankle too much, it’s as if it’s totally ceased up. I cannot walk down stairs at all using the injured foot first.

I am now off work, and due to the type of work I do I do not get paid. I have to be back at work by the 26th November but have to have a medical first (which I wont get if this carries on). I have to wear heels as part of my uniform, which at the moment I can’t even get my foot/ankle into that position.

It is getting me really really down.
Can anyone help, or give me some advice????

    • ANSWER:
Hi!! So sorry to hear about your injury!

Obvioulsy keep icing and elevating the foot above your hips as often as possible. Take anti-inflamatories to reduce any swelling.

It is a very slow healing process. I broke and dislocated my ankle in april this year, and I am no where near 100% and I am only 22. Just focus on trying to put weight on when possible, and flex it up, down, left and right and hold for 6-10 secs each way. When trying to raise up on your toes, hold onto something, and do it primarily with your good foot, and then put your bad foot down as well, and try putting a bit of weight on it.

Carry on using the flexie band to try and build up resistance,a nd your calf muscles more, and just keep going with it! It is hard, but you will get there!!

      Good luck!

  28. QUESTION:
    Why is it still swollen?!?!?!?!?
I sprained my ankle over 2 weeks ago at practice. i couldnt walk on it. got x rays nothing was broken it was reallly swollen and massivly bruised. a week later i was walking/hobbling and i rolled again. i was able to continue walking on it. this entire time the swelling has gone down about half but has stopped reducing. i am currently in a boot for suspicion of a hairline fracture but i am afraid if the swelling doesnt go away the trainers wont let me return to practice. i was doing electric stim and ice more than once a day until it was decided it was no longer helping. any input appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
Elevation (anytime you can rest it and elevate it!), cold compresses and Motrin. The MOST important thing is to keep any weight off and give this time to heal. Each time that you put weight on this causes more “damage”. Letting it heal is the only thing that is going to help!

It hurts and my mom doesnt believe me :( :( i’m 13?
on wednesday i was in the pool (i live in spain) and i think i twisted my ankle, but when i came out, it didnt hurt, it just felt weak. on thursday when i got up my foot really hurt and it was a little swollen but no bruising, so i iced it and the swelling went down and put my ankle support on, and limped around the house all day(my mom was at work). yesterday when i got up it really hurt, even more, so i could hardly walk, and when my mom got home she started shouting at me saying i was pretending to be hurt for attention cause my best friend has just moved and i wont see her anymore. my ankle really hurts and i think i might have a grade II sprain(looked on the internet)and it will have to be plastered or bandaged, but my mom wont take me to the hospital or doctors cause on tuesday i go on holiday to the UK, and she says i wont beable to fly if i’m on crutches…
please tell me what to do…my ankle really hurts, and if i leave it’ll get worse

-i only live with my mum
-the rest of my family live in the UK

    • ANSWER:
You really should get it looked at. Keep trying to convince her that youre telling the truth. I had a grade II sprain and without medical attention it didnt heal for almost a year because I kept re-spraining it during sports. I understand how bad it hurts so if you keep trying eventually she has to believe you. Good luck and get better.

  31. QUESTION:
IS THEIR A POSSIBILITY IT’S BROKEN?
ok so on Friday I was running to my dance class and there was a dip in the ground and I forgot about it (I’ve fell because of that dip before) so when I run when I reach a certain speed I start leaning forward and I did that earlier in school it’s like you feel like your going to fall but you know you wont. so I was running like that and my right foot went down into the dip and just wobbled and I fell my aunt came out there and helped me to the car( I couldn’t put ANY pressure on it at all) so now I’m on crutches but I haven’t been to the doctor (I got the crutches because my aunt had them when she was in college) and I’m going to the doctor hopefully on Monday but I’m still going to school and it was slightly swollen and I’ve had problems with my ankles before (I’ll just start limping out of nowhere) I was just wondering of it was possibly broken or if it was just sprained.
    thx

    • ANSWER:
I’ve had many sprained ankles and a broken ankle. Generally extreme pain is your body’s way of telling you to stop doing something. If you can’t walk at all, you should have it examined to see if there is a small fracture or other injury.

  33. QUESTION:
So i was playing basketball and my ankle is now messed up need advice upon wha ti should do?
So today i was playing basketball in my game i was running in the grab a rebound i got a the rebound when i came down i landed on the side of my foot and i felt it role, i kept my shoe on for about and hr and a hlf to keep it tight and apply pressure, now i am iceing it and i cant move it forwards backwards or side to side like i can a tiny bit move it up but it feels like it is like locked in place and its swollen bad, i had previously injured this same ankle back in 2009 and sprained it bad, idk what i did now if its broken fractured torn leagiments high sprain idk im just really nervous on what to do cause i mean i can go to the doctors now and there going to nothing besides we can see because its swollen so xrays wont do me any good. Whats ur best advice and what do you think is wrong with it?

    • ANSWER:
Keep your foot elevated, and go see your doctor. Don’t try to move it anymore than u naturally need to. If your foot iS swollen,u still need the xrays as it well help determine the proper healing process for you. As,you don’t want to make this any worse. An ankle is a funny thing, its not uncommon to need surgery to reset the bones if in fact you have broken it. So,you need to get xrays, apply ice, keep it elevated, and use it as little as possible. If u have crutches, use them for walking around until you get to your doc. Good luck, and take it easy.

    • ANSWER:
You are not allowing the ankle adequate time to rest. If you walk around too much on a sprain or return to activities too soon afterwards, the ankle is weak and prone to reinjury (which sounds exactly what happened to you). Stay off of it and keep it elevated. If you do have a fracture, you won’t be able to practice anyway and certainly shouldn’t be doing it if you have a sprain so severe you need to wear a boot.
