Burning Pain On Ankle

Have you ever felt a lower back burning pain that seems to travel down your leg? You may have sciatica pain. If you suffer from sciatica, you know that there is something wrong. There are cases of sciatica that do not even present itself with back pain, but others may feel lower back burning pain when they have sciatica.

How long have you been afflicted with symptoms that can include the feeling that your foot is on fire? Do you feel as if you really have tried every medication out there to treat the problem? Has your doctor given you pain meds and muscle relaxants to deal with it all? You may actually grow weary of taking medication for pain in your lower back. It is becoming a more and more common treatment.

The first step to dealing with and alleviating your lower back burning pain is to identify what is causing it. For some people, one wrong step can be all it takes to be in pain, for others, it may be brought on by a more serious injury. There are cases where the back pain is only brought on by performing in an odd way or moving certain body parts at an odd angle. When you can pinpoint a certain thing that brings on the pain, you can actively take steps to refrain from doing those things. You can simply modify your movements and actions to reduce the pain of sciatica.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have a burning pain in my ankle, what could this be?
I have a burning pain on the inside of my left ankle. I haven’t injured it, and the pain came on very suddenly. It’s almost right on the inside bone of the ankle, what can this be?

    • ANSWER:
Strange as it may sound, it could be gout. I had it in that area a few months ago.

Gout (also called metabolic arthritis) is a disease due to an inborn uric acid metabolism. In this condition monosodium urate crystals are deposited on the articular cartilage of joints and in the particular tissue like tendons. This provokes an inflammatory reaction of these tissues. These deposits often increase in size and burst through the skin to form sinuses discharging a chalky white material.

Normally, the human bloodstream only carries small amounts of uric acid. However, if the blood has an elevated concentration of uric acid, uric acid crystals are deposited in the cartilage and tissue surrounding joints. Elevated blood levels of uric acid can also result in uric kidney stones.

Gout usually attacks the big toe (approximately 75% of first attacks), however it can also affect other joints such as the ankle, heel, instep, knee, wrist, elbow, fingers, and spine. In some cases the condition may appear in the joints of the small toes which have become immobile due to impact injury earlier in life, causing poor blood circulation that leads to gout.

Does anyone know what could cause burning pain to radiate up my ankle?
The burning happens suddenly and feels like someone has poured something very warm on the outside of the ankle. There is a little tenderness but nothing too bothersome. Its just an odd sensation and makes me concerned. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?

    • ANSWER:

Burning Pain on top of my right foot that radiates to my ankle?
I am having a burning pain on the top of my right foot. When I walk it gets worse and it radiates to right under my ankle. I also have a weird feeling in my foot when I bend my big toe up and down. It almost like my muscle is rubbing on my bone with no moisture. Does anyone anything about this or have you ever had anything like this? Does it have to do with my back?

    • ANSWER:
There are several possibilities for what could be causing this such as damaged nerves which can occur because of things like arthritis (an example only but can affect any one of any age) or a back problem such as a herniated or bulging disc (another example only).

I agree with the poster above me about consulting with a Podiatrist to see what they say. I would also recommend a consultation with a specialist that deals with back problems for an additional opinion to see what they say.

Very bad ankle pain. Sharp pains and burning?
Ok well lately I have been having really bad ankle pain. Sharp pains and burning not only in my ankle knee as well. I can’t sleep at night because I am up in tears. atm I am crying from the pain. I have seen 8 doctors and only ONE said I might have: Rheumatoid Arthritis.

    I am asking:
    What could this be?
Should I get it looked at again?
How can I tell the doctors that they need to find out what it is?

    What’s going on:
    Sharp pain
    Swelling all the time
I can put very little weight on it.

    • ANSWER:
There are several possibilities for what could be going on such as irritated nerves around that area (an example only).

I would recommend seeing another doctor about this. I would recommend seeing a Podiatrist (a doctor that diagnoses and treats diseases and disorders of the foot and ankle) to see what they think could be going on.

They may need to take x-rays of the ankle if that hasn’t been done already to see what could be going on.

    • ANSWER:

Ankle swelling, and pain with burning sensation what is it?
On an off for the past six months, my rt ankle periodically wakes me up in the middle of the night with this hot craping feeling, and the only way I can get the 8 pain on a scale of 1-10 to ease is to dive into a warm bathtub and soak it. Walking on it used to help but it has gotten worse and more frequent. Its not just a leg cramp its worse. Its not from injury that I know of or exercise. I did take a medication six months ago that caused a lactic acid build up so I quit it, (Metformin) for PCOS. Any ideas what this could be?
This hot burning pain/cramp runs from my anckle up through my calf on the outter side of my leg.

    • ANSWER:
That is unusual, I have a good friend who has a similar problem except her foot swells, I never knew this was possible, but women can get Gout, and that is what her Doctor believes she has. Gout is usually caused by a build up of Uric Acid. You also might have your blood sugar checked for Diabetes. Diabetes often causes a burning sensation in the legs and/or feet.

Hope that helps and good luck.

Pain in ankle and upper calf when striking ball?
I am a college soccer player and have never gotten hurt until recently (I am a senior in college). A girl went to shoot the ball in a game a week and a half ago and i stuck my foot out to block it and my right foot was pushed strongly to the outside (right side). I went down immediately with pain and could not continue with the game. Instantly it felt swollen on the inside but not on the outside but it was an intensely cold rainy game also. The swelling was bad strictly around the ankle bone the next day. I could barely walk for a couple days after and when I stepped my ankle hurt but also my upper middle calf had intense stabbing pains if I put a lot of weight on my foot. The trainers say it is an upper ankle sprain but I am not convinced of this. It has been a week and a half, I can run perfectly fine with mild pain in the ankle but when I strike the ball with the inside of foot I get a stabbing pain shooting up my calf and sometimes a burning pain in my ankle at the same time. I can play with the pain, i played in a game recently but was in substantial pain and rarely used my right foot unless need be. Sitting out is not an option so if there is any information that I can gain from this post that would be extremely helpful!!

    • ANSWER:

Has anyone experienced burning pain in their lower leg? Especially around the ankle?

    Unexplained ankle pain….please help?
Ok trying to explain this the best I can:

A week ago I had swelling on the top of my foot with pain when I walked. I think it was due to running after a friends dog that got loose in my work boots up and down an incline. Not exactly the choice of footwear to do this in. The pain started on thursday night, it was a burning sensation that got worse when I tried to put some weight on it, on the top of the foot more towards the little toe side. Friday and Saturday it seemed to get better, but me being stupid I decided to meet some friends Saturday night. It got harder to walk and I was limping by the end of the night. It was the burning pain again, but worse. As soon as I got off of it and took some Motrin it seemed to calm down. The next morning I woke up to a swollen ankle on both sides plus across the top of the foot where the shin meet the foot, with pain below the actual ankle on both side but more pain on the outside. It was very reddish purple when it wasn’t elevated. I also had pain in the Achilles Tendon and the bottom of the heel. It was impossible to walk for a couple days, I had to use crutches. I went to me GP, I was informed to take Motrin for pain, ice the ankle and elevate it. Also to use a compression wrap. I had an xray that was normal. It is now 9 days after waking up to that and I can walk again, the pain is getting better and the swelling has went down.

My concern is what exactly does this sound like? I didn’t roll my ankle that night at all.. It is still really stiff and the range of motion is limited. Im having trouble bending my foot up all the way. I’m still feeling pain on the outside ankle, under it. Can I do anything to help this along? How long (est) do you think this is going to take to heal?
Should have added the stiffness is now on the outside ankle, below the actual ‘ankle’ bone.

    • ANSWER:
You don’t have to injure your ankle to have a sprain in your foot. Anywhere that tendons and ligaments connect with a joint is a place you can have a sprain. A sprain can take longer to heal than a fracture can because bone regenerates fairly easily. Some sprains require surgery to reduce. I’m sure your doctor told you to continue the ibuprofen (Motrin) because the anti-inflammatory properties of that med will help. Keep the foot elevated as much as possible. It should improve with time. If not, see your doc again, and ask about a referral to an ortho doc. Just don’t go dancing until the foot wants to!

I woke up with a horrible pain in my ankle?
I didn’t have it the night before, and I can’t remember sitting on it wrong yesterday or possibly hurting myself, but I woke up and had this burning, throbbing pain in my ankle, closer to the back of my foot, and I can barely walk on it.

Could I have done something in my sleep or what?
I tried to “roll” it and make it pop or something, but it didn’t help at all.

    • ANSWER:
See your doctor he might be able to help . Have a great day

A Burning pain on the outside of my right ankle?
Recently I have been experiencing a burning pain on the outside facing side of my ankle. It first showed up yesterday and has proceeded throughout the day today. When I walk or when I move my foot a certain way it burns.

Some background: I had a surgery about 4 years ago for a broken foot. It was the same one that is burning now. I don’t know if this is directly related to the pain now, because the surgery was on the bone in my foot that makes up the big toe.

Also I don’t really expect anyone to know what this is, but some ideas would be helpful. I don’t have insurance so I won’t be going to a doctor unless this keeps up for awhile.

    • ANSWER:
That is a symptom of RSD, comes after surgery, look it up when u have time, the pain is really really bad usually.

my ankle is burning in pain for the past 2 weeks??
Now it feels like its going up my calve. Ive been excersizing everyday on the eliptical. Is is from that? It is swollen and I can barly walk on it? Should I go to the doctor?

    • ANSWER:
I’m not an expert, but it sounds like you hurt your Achilles tendon, which is a muscle that connects your heel bone to your calf muscle. Stop straining your leg immediately – i.e. keep that leg off the elliptical and give it plenty of rest. See a doctor to determine how bad it is and what you should do.

What is causing severe burning pain in toes?
I sprained my ankle four months ago. Ever since then I’ve suffered from severe burning pain in my toes. I have been to the orthopedic dr. and haven’t found any relief or real answers as to what is causing this. I’m a teacher and since school’s started and I’m on my feet by the end of the day the pain is so severe I can hardly walk. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be causing this, what can I do to help with the pain?

    • ANSWER:
One potential cause of burning in the feet is any traumatic event that affects the foot directly. If the foot is struck hard with an object, sprained, or broken, the toes may feel as if they are burning. Running or walking excessively, or with improper padding in the shoes (or barefoot) can cause burning in the toes. If blisters form in between the toes they may be uncomfortable and burn. Numbness and burning in the extremities, especially the toes, can be caused by an ineffective circulatory system. Obesity and diabetes are likely to be a risk factor for toe burning and pain. Heart disease and clogged arteries (peripheral artery disease) may also lead to burning sensations in the feet.
      Hope this helps good luck.

    Post Surgery(Ankle Arthroscopy) Pain?
First I am planning on calling my doctor tuesday morning so please do not include this in your response. I had surgery 5/25 and took pain killers very regularly up through thursday night. I had an apt friday and the doctor said everything looked good. The next day when I sat up and put my foot on the floor I got pain near the one incision but not the other and it went away after a few minutes. The next day the pain lingered a little longer. Now I have an agonising burning pain whenever I do not have my ankle elevated. I have followed the Drs instructions religiously, lots of ice, kept it elevated and rested. Could this indicate an infection, some other complication or is this normal and a result of taking the pain killers sporadically. I am only looking for opinions on cause of the pain not what to do.
Hello. I didn’t ask for what to look for. I asked what it could be. Why can’t people just answer the actual question.

    • ANSWER:
      Hello Linnea13
Monitor your temperature, that would be an indication of post procedural infection. Also watch for unusual swelling, pain to the touch, and hotness at the area of the procedure. Your physician will probably want to take a look at it, and maybe take a blood sample for white blood cell count. Hang in there, you will heal over time.

what is this burning pain in my foot?
For several months now I keep getting this burning stinging pain in my left foot on the inside of my foot just below the ankle, sorta near the arch. It is extremely painful. I can be sitting, standing or sleeping and it hits me all of a sudden. I almost want to scream. The thing is it started out on the other side of the same foot. Now that side doesn’t seem so painful as the other side. What is going on?

    • ANSWER:
Keep an eye on this and if the pain or tingling continues it may be the beginning of DVT.

This is very painful and pain pills do not help. I have had it for over 2 years and the doctor was slow to diagnose it until I was in critical shape.

Mine started with a sudden onset of calf pain and leg swelling. The pain was worse when the leg was hanging down. There was warmth to the area because the veins were inflamed.

I am on coumidin (warfarin) as a blood thinner. Usually when they say 6 months, they mean for the rest of your life. The blood thinner does not resolve the current clot problem, but supposedly keeps new clots from forming.

Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, is caused by a blood clot in a muscle and can be life-threatening. Symptoms include swelling, pain, and tenderness in the legs. Risk factors include immobility, hormone therapy, and pregnancy.

DVTs can occur anywhere in the body but are most frequently found in the deep veins of the legs, thighs, and pelvis. They may infrequently arise from the upper extremities usually because of trauma, or from an indwelling catheter (tubing) or device.

A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a condition wherein a blood clot (thrombus) forms in a vein of the deep system.

Thrombophlebitis is a condition in which there is both inflammation and a blood clot in a vein. Thrombophlebitis can occur in either superficial or deep veins. Superficial thrombophlebitis occurs in veins close to the skin surface, and usually causes pain, swelling, and redness in the area of the vein. Superficial thrombophlebitis usually is treated with heat, elevation of the affected leg or arm, and anti–inflammatory medications. A thrombosis in a deep vein is a much more serious problem than one in a superficial vein. The reason for this is that a piece of the clot in deep vein from a DVT can break off and travel through the deep veins back to the heart, and eventually be pumped by the heart into the arteries of the lung. When this happens, the condition is called pulmonary embolism (PE). The blood clot is called an embolus (plural emboli), and the process of breaking off and traveling to the lungs is called embolism.

Narcotics didn’t help my pain. I now take Tizanidine 4mg 5/day and Lyrica Cv 100 mg 3/day. This helps the nerve pain and I can walk some now. I am feeling much better pain wise.

What is the burning pain in the lateral Left calf, extending to ankle?
It extends a little posteriorly and started about 3 days ago. It has gotten slightly worse each day, nothing gets rid of the pain. It also is hypersensitive to touch. My last MRI of my Lumbar spine was a couple years ago and showed mild degenerative disc disease in 1-2 of the levels. I have no back pain at this time. Another issue is I had a chair leg land on my outer foot proximal to the 5th toe, the person being 220 pounds sitting on the chair, the metatarsal area I believe, occured about 2 weeks ago. Initially bruised purple, then faded, now red blotchy areas remain and pain slightly worse, could this be a fracture or tendon injury??? Thank you for your attention to this.

    • ANSWER:
Your achilles tendon tightened up to give you that pain. When the tendon tightens up it shortens the whole muscle so it gets tight and then pulls up on the foot where its attached to cause the pain in the ankles. To get rid of this pain you have to free up the achilles tendon in your leg and here’s how to do that:
      Achilles tendon:
While sitting and your leg on your lap, take both thumbs and place them side by side at about ankle height on the tendon on the back of your leg and apply pressure hard and hold. After 30 seconds slowly raise your toes up as far as you can, release the pressure but hold your foot there for another 30 seconds.
If you have had issues with your back you might want to free up those muscles as well. They may not be in pain right now but they can still be in a tightened up mode which will take them into pain much more easily than if they were fully at rest. This would also help in warding off the problems they found with the discs there. Here’s how to free up your back muscles to put them fully at rest:
      (do from a sitting position)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly pull down on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side. For both- for best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

Broken ankle with surgical implants, chronic pain in 3 toes after 1yr,pain manager does nothing? Next step?
Broken ankle, surgical implants causing burning, stabbing pain after 1 1/2 yrs. On vicodin, saw pain manager, had therapy, second opinion.Where do I go next, this is the 3rd surgery, last one 14 mo. ago where do I go next? New hospital? New pain manager? New surgeon? Also spiral fractured other leg this yr, I am 51.

    • ANSWER:
You just have not yet seen the RIGHT doctor. NEVER get your second opinion from a doctor in the SAME office; get it elsewhere. What was the 2nd opinion (different office)?

You have had enough surgeries! Go to the nearest University Medical Center Medical School & get their advice. If there is none, find a doctor who does more than 50% Prolotherapy (injections) every 3-4 weeks x6-8 to regrow & strengthen damaged ligaments which are still not repaired. I believe you still have damaged ligaments that need special attention.

You may also have bone-thinning, leading to other fractures & pain. STOP all exercising until you see a Prolotherapy MD/ND.

Even if you must travel 400miles for “prolo”, it will be well worth it! I promise you MUCH less pain with your FIRST visit and NO drugs! Just do it!

      Good luck! :)

Pain on knee , ankle and soles when i stand or walk?
I am 26 years male weighting 110 kgm , from 1 year I did great effort and pressure on my knees

few days later I started to suffer pain / burning under the front of the knee cover ( patellar )

I did MRI and x-ray , the MRI show that every thing is ok except minor effussion and the X-RAY showed Cartilage and joints are very normal .

The pain increase when I bend my knees and recently some other syptoms began to appear

-when I stand or walk for minutes I began to feel that my both knees are not holding me and are vibrating

    - feel Pain in the ankle tendons and on the soles of my feet , I did gloucose test and it was negative

    - click voice without pain , the voice comes from my knees and ankle with movement

I went to many doctors here in Egypt but no one helped , some say it is knee roughness and others say it is weak muscle

    • ANSWER:
Hesham, it sounds as if you could have torn your achilles tendon in the back of your ankle. the noise you are hearing could be it tearing. symptoms are sore foot when you put your weight on it.

try to stand on your toes. if you cant do this then you may have ruptured (torn) it.

if it is your heel that is painful when you take a step to walk then you could have “plantar fasciitis.”

look them both up on the internet and see what sypmtoms match yours. if it IS a torn tendon you must go to the hospital straight away as it needs immediate treatment. The doctor there might make you lie on your stomach and press the back of your leg to find out if your foot flexes or not.

good luck and let me know how you get on

I experience severe BURNING leg pain on the side(s) of my calf(s) when walking for exercise.?
I have had this pain for about 4 1/2 years: burning pain appears in outer lower legs (between knee and ankle). 3 weeks ago went to pain therapist that gave me 2 S.I. Joint injections (lidocane) for my left sacriliac and hip joint. Pain was mostly not evident when walking AFTER shots were admistered (pain only happened twice in 3 week period with daily walking and was only in left leg – not both now). Pain appeared again yesterday and today -LEFT leg. Still, pain is not apparent every time I walk for exercise. No pattern: pain might appear at 10 steps or 2 miles, pace does not matter. Pain only appears when I ‘walk for exercise’. Yesterday Doc placed me on a muscle relaxer hoping it might calm the area down. Pain killers do not help the pain that comes when walking. Prior to shots I did experience pain/numbness in outer toes on each foot and after shots I have no toe pain in toes when walking. Left foot does slightly tingle constantly. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this?
I too am unable to use the treadmill after a short time — but when I use the eliptical I usually go much longer before the pain begins.

    • ANSWER:
I experience the same burning pain you do in the lower legs, outside area of the calves. I’m on my feet all the time at work.

I haven’t went to the doctor. I don’t trust them really.

There is a website called WebMD. Type in your symptoms and see what comes up.

I wouldn’t mind if you kept me in the loop as to what you find. You can email me at yahoo, if you like.

I have an old ankle injury acting up. Can someone help?
I sprained my ankle in 1993 when I was out of the country so I didn’t go to the doctor. I never knew the severity of the sprain but it hurt!! It was swollen and very colorful. It eventually healed, but never 100 %. I heard though that it was normal to always have some discomfort once you’ve sprained an ankle so I never thought twice about it. However, 16 years later, I suddenly have this burning pain in my ankle and its hurts so bad when I stretch pointing my toes! I can walk just fine, it just burns often. Does anyone have any idea whats going on? If I was to go see a Dr., what kind should I go see? I don’t think an x-ray will help since it’s not a bone injury. Suggestions….anyone ??

    • ANSWER:
Most Ligament injuries do not totally heal. Even if the pain resolves, the ligament will not be as strong as it was prior to the injury. Since ligaments stabilize the joints, ligament injury then produces a loose joint. If the ligament never heals, chronic joint looseness or instability results.

The symptoms of chronic ankle instability are feelings of the joint giving way, swelling, pain, decreased range of motion or excessive motion, and recurring sprains. The pain is usually chronic or recurrent. Other symptoms include complaints while wearing high heels, increased symptoms after walking or sports, and, as stated, recurrent sprains.

If the ankle instability is not treated, cartilage deterioration with resultant degenerative arthritis develops. This sequence of events occurs everywhere in the body. If a ligament does not heal, instability of the joint occurs-and the end-result is arthritis with good prospects for fusion or joint replacement surgery.

Studies on injured ligaments show that at least one year is required before healing has been completed or the total amount of healing occurs. Injured ligaments do not entirely regenerate. Rather, they repair with scar tissue. Repair and regeneration begin at 48 hours to 72 hours post-injury, and continue maximally for six weeks.

From six weeks to 12 months the ligament tissue remodels, contracts, and gains tensile strength. After 12 months the ligament and scar tissue generally matures and achieves 50 to 70 percent strength of the original ligament. Do you understand the magnitude of this statement? On average, ligaments only heal to 50 to 70 percent strength when they are injured.

Pain relief is not a reliable sign that a ligament has healed; perfect function is the sign. A joint that is strong, without swelling or signs of weakness, is a better measure.

Do you have ligament irritation of the ankles?
To test for ligament irritation in the area of the right ankle, cross your right ankle over the left knee. Your right hand should be placed over the right ankle. The left hand then pulls on the toes of the right foot, inverting the ankle. If pain is felt in the right ankle with this maneuver, most likely injury to the ligaments on the outer part of the ankle has occurred. The same maneuver can be used for testing the left ankle.

An inner ankle sprain usually involves the deltoid ligaments. The test for this ankle sprain involves eversion of your foot (the opposite direction from inversion) by turning your foot out. If this causes increased pain on the inner part of your ankle, then there is a high likelihood of ligament injury to the deltoid ligaments. Unfortunately, many times the stability tests are negative, in that they do not reproduce pain. A better measure of ligament injury is by direct palpation. Often, when the stability test is negative (no pain), direct palpation over the injured ligament will be very painful. This is where the Prolotherapy is given.

I have burning and tingling in my foot and pain in my hip after knee surgery?
I had surgery on my knee 2 weeks ago. I had 2 procedures done, one to realign my knee cap (by cutting and moving a piece of the tibia) and orthoscopic surgery to fix a torn meniscus. I have been having very bad pain in my hip which my surgeon said was probably sciatica and prescribed me a nerve pain medication and I have been having a bad burning/tingling sensation in my foot and ankle. I thought this sensation was due to swelling in my leg, ankle, and foot but the swelling has gone in my foot and I am still having the burning, pain and tingling sensations. I took the pain pills an hour ago or so and it’s not helping this time. What could be causing this? Should it go away on it’s own or should I contact my doctor again. (they are getting tired of me calling)

What do you think could be the cause of this pain?
It is down the outside of my thigh from level with my hip to just above my knee, sometimes it is on both sides but often just on one. If I do alot of walking it is worse and becomes a burning pain rather that an ache at which time I become very stiff too. I am a 47 year old female and am pretty fit and not over weight. I do however take a low dose of dicloflex to keep an old injury to my ankle in check.
    Any thoughts?

Burning pain on the bottom of my foot?
I have a burning pain on the bottom of my foot right near my arch. I was injured playing soccer a few months ago and had posterior tibial tendonitis and an ankle sprain. The tendonitis has healed but I resprained my ankled a week ago. The burning feeling on the bottom of my foot I have only recently felt for the past couple of weeks. It occurs randomly and lasts for a few minutes to a few hours, some days I never even feel it. I just stretched my calf and achilles and I feel the burning again and much worse this time.

Someone shoes grazed against the skin on my ankle and it burns?
A tiny bit of skin came off, not too much at all. However it burns pretty badly. What can I do to ease the pain/burning and help it heal?

    Thank you so very much!

    • ANSWER:
Put some Neosporin on it to rid the cut of any bacteria. I’d put a band-aid on it too just to keep the cut clean.
Avoid tight clothes that could irritate the cut too (such as pants that are tight near the hem or tight socks).
I hope your cut heals quickly. Feel better soon.

Ankle pain out of no where?
I am not sure what is going on with my ankle. I play soccer for my high school team and today we had a practice. I fell hurting my knee and my ankle just a slight bit. At that point my ankle did not hurt at all. About 6 hours later, after I got home, took a shower and laid in bed I experienced a very strong pain in my ankle. Right now it’s burning up and the pain is almost unbearable. I am not sure what happened and where did this pain come from. It’s a bit swollen. I put some ice on and took some pain killers. I am not sure if it’s serious or not. Do I have to go to the doctor? What should I do? Does anyone know where this pain came from?

I injured my ankle when I was about 8 (now I am 17), I fell of the top of the dresser and landed straight on my right foot (the same one that is hurting now). It was nothing serious, it was just swollen for quit a long time back then. I just thought that might be a reason why it’s hurting now.
Pleaaaase help me! I have school tomorrow! I have to go!

I get terrible burning pain in my shins when i walk
I started noticing the pain when i started going to college last year.
I walk for a short distance and then i get a terrible ache feeling in my left shin, and it starts to burn…if i carry on walking it gets worse and i begin to limp.

My right shin can last a little bit longer than my left.

But what is this pain? how can i get rid of it? i live not even 10 minutes away by foot from college and i really like walking there.

I’m not the most fit guy, i smoke and i’m currently overweight.

I’ve read on the net that because i havent used my legs so much, my body has broken down the muscle tissue. Is there any foot/ankle/shin/leg excercises i can do to make my shins stronger?

    any help is appreciated, thanks.
EDIT: Nursekla, This pain is agonising. i’ve had it for the past three months, the only thing i can do is to rest and then continue walking…which results in me taking a 5 min break every two – three minutes…

At my college we cant just walk into the other teaching area’s without specific reasons…i’m in the IT department. so i have no reason to venture into the fitness area

    • ANSWER:
Sounds like shin splints, lots of athletes get this. Ice helps with the pain other than that just continue walking and they eventually go away. If they don’t go away in a couple of weeks you might want to see a doctor. You may also want to check with the college’s athletic trainer about exercises you can do to help with shin splints.

What do you think is wrong with my legs?
I have a burning pain from the knee down going to my ankle, a sharp pain where my bones come together, a sore pain on the sides, and large sacks of inflammation around the knee. My pain scale is a 8 or 9 and the xray at most shows a small amount of calcium.

No other scans were done over a 3 year period and all pain killers have quit working.

What is most likely the real diagnoses?

    • ANSWER:
The xray showed calcium? Didnt the doctor share his/her thoughts whats wrong??
Did this pain start on its own or did you injure your leg.
They didnt see any leg tumors on the xray? Sumtyms that can cause an increase of calcium.

Burning makes me think nerve pain but itf your knee is swelling something else is going on. Have you been checked for varicose veins? You would need an ultrasound.
If you have had this for 3 years i doubt its really bad or you wouldn be on here.
Id say nerve damage or the vein problem (my step dad has a vein problem over his left knee)

i have a really bad pain and burning sensation on both my legs, its from my ankle to my knee is that normal?

And should i go to the doctor??

What could be causing the burning, stinging pain in my leg?
Yesterday I had a burning, stinging pain in the top inside of my ankle. It hurt to move my ankle and also hurt to press on it. I’ve had this before occasionally and it typically goes away. I think it might be a pinched nerve or something. Well this morning, I woke up to find that the pain has lessened in my ankle. (It still hurts to the touch, but not to move) However, what’s concerning me is that a very similar pain is now on the back inside of my knee. I actually think the central part might be just above the knee, but the pain is shooting up a little into my thigh and down into my calf. I’m afraid it may be more serious than a pinched nerve even though it feels the same.

Burning pain in my right knee?
Recently I’ve started to feel a lot of pain in my right knee, mainly on the left side of my right knee, right next to my knee cap. I first started to notice it when I started having trouble with my hyperextension. I’ve always been hyperextended but just recently my knees started locking back, mainly in ballet class. I only feel the pain on the side of my knee like I said above. I started wearing a brace on it for extra support. But then a few days ago i was stretching my straddle, laying on my back grabbing my feet and opening my legs to a straddle. I was grabbing down at my ankles and my knees were not locked in their hyperextension but I had an awful pain on the left side of my knee again. It’s almost like a burning kind of pain, like friction.
Any ideas of what may have happened?
I had my dance recital last Sunday and that was the last time I danced. I have been resting my body a lot, especially because i have tendonitis in my hips.

I did feel that pain in my knee again when I went bike riding two days ago. (forgot to put that up top there)

For the past few weeks, I have (off and on) had a pain at the very top of my foot, where it bends/meets my leg. (Like, same place as my ankle, just in the front). It’s an ache, not a sharp pain, but it burns! Anyone know what this could be?

Can a sprain ankle be a catalyst for bone cancer?
Im male, 29 yo, no personal history of any cancer at all, low cholesterol, slightly elevated BP, health body weight, I work out about 3-4 times a week, now about 1 with this crap going on. About 2 months ago I sprained my ankle. Probably a grade II based on researched symptoms. I was able to walk back to my car fine after running on the trail in the woods where I got hurt immediately following injury. Typical swelling and all that.

I have a familiy history of cancer, my Aunt died at 35 of ovarian, my grandmother (moms side) has a form of blood cancer that is smoldering, my grandfather (dads side) had a brain tumor removed in his 30′s.

Im worried due to the following symptoms and I have seen a doctor whom indicated months ago it was a sprain and do the usual RICE.

Im not self diagnosing by anymeans but im not an idiot either and can atleast describe what I feel.

-Numbness in my toes and foot across the bottom all the way from my heel area.
-Tingling in my toes especially the left 3.
-Slight paralysis in those same 3 toes and it seems a 4th is following slowly. I cant move them as far as the right foot which is 100% fine.
-Intense burning pain, soreness, and my inside ankle bone is highly sensitve to pressure, the outside is slightly.
-The pain feels like its coming from deep within my ankle, down in the core. Its getting worse each night and now I cant sleep much.
-Its waking me up very early in the morning with ever increasing intense pain.
-My left calf muscle is feeling more pain further and further up like my nerves are rapidly firing slight pain senses.
-My tendons also hurt but the funny part is that I am 100% stable and can actually still run on this foot fine although I dont really because I dont want to cause further injury until I know for sure.
-****My left (injured ankle) swelling is going down alot now, but the bones feel wider and more spread apart than my right. This was never before I used to take great care of my feet so I would have known if I was out of symmetry my whole life. As if the space between the outside and inside of my ankle across the thickness of my ankle is wider than my right foot.

I have another appointment in a week or so as of writing this but not for my foot. Just common blood work etc…cholesterol yada yada…

Could a ankle sprain have triggered a tumor like growth down in side my ankle. And if it could or did, of course I will get seen by an MD soon for this, could growth cause an ever increasing pain to experienced as it is pushing on other flesh in side my foot?

if I wait to long and it would happen to be a cancer is amputation for something like that inevidable. I dont mind if it were as long as I could get rid of this pain and move on with my life.

    Thanks any takers?

    • ANSWER:
      Heya :)
There is no Evidence implying that A break or sprain causes cancer.
There has been many tests in this, showing nothing.
As you are aware cancer is caused by the multiplying of cells, nothing that could be related to cancer.

When i was 8 i broke my hip by gently knocking into a radiator at school (something that really shouldn’t have caused a breakage)

I went to the hospital and they put it in a cast ect and i no one really thought anything of it.
After a few days i had deep bone pains in my hip joint.
      They were agonizing.
The pains would be worse at night at would stop me sleeping.
They rarely hurt during the day.
There was some swelling, but only localized and it DIDNT go away.

I went back to the doctors after a few weeks and they re examined my X ray.
They found a tumor on my hip socket joint and everything went from there…

I was told that bone cancer makes your bones and joints in the affected area weak and frail.

The fact that i had broken my hip wasn’t the cause of the cancer, but what had led to investigations.
If it wasn’t for that, i wouldn’t have known until much later.

Yes, SOME the pains you are experiencing could be bone cancer, but there are some symptoms of yours which defiantly aren’t!
i highly doubt that it would be cancer in the bone.
The pains you get from bone cancer are VERY localized and affect ONLY the areas in which the tumor is present.

You are experiencing pains starting from your toes, to further up your leg.
You could be experiencing strain from not putting pressure on your leg whilst it was healing?

Im not sure though, im not a doctor.
I can only speak from experience and what ive been told!

If doctors did find Cancer in your ankle there are a number of things they could do.
I started off with 4 cycles of chemo and then “limb saving surgery”, were they replace the affected bone/s with a metal fixture. It stops amputations and all you get is scars :)
I then had more chemo and radiotherapy.

If you do leave it too long, this form of treatment isn’t offered and you may have to have an amputation.

But as i said, dont worry!
Bone cancer is a very rare cancer and is most comman in children and older people and you are neither!

Make sure you mention it to your doctor as if its something simple it can be treated fast, and if it is cancer your treatment options are better :D

I hope everything goes well at your check :)
      Please let me know?

    Help With Severe Foot Pain?
For the past year, i have had foot pain. I work on my feet all day, on concrete, wear good shoes, and stretch my feet as much as i can. Just after 2 hours of being on my feet i start to experience severe burning and pain in my feet and recently in the past few months ankle pain in both ankles. When i am able to get off my feet and start to stand they hurt so bad I have to hold on to something to walk. Any ideas what this may be?
All of these responses are great. Let me add I have tried different shoes and inserts, OTC medications. And sometimes i see my feet when i walk turning inward. The pain eases with walking short distances, but returns instantly when I stop.

    • ANSWER:
See your health care provider as soon as possible (podiatrist or neurologist). A burning sensation on the soles of your feet can arise from any number of causes, from ill-fitting shoes to diabetes. The most serious cause is peripheral neuropathy–damage to the leg nerves–often from diabetes or alcoholism and less commonly from vitamin deficiency or lead poisoning. A rare disorder called erythromelalgia increases blood flow to the hands and feet and can also produce a searing sensation.
Some people experience fiery feet because they’re sensitive to a chemical in the inner lining of their shoes (particularly some types of athletic shoes). Try changing your footgear to see if the problem subsides. If not, see your doctor to rule out medical causes.
I hope this helps you. And good luck.

Ankle pain thats lasted over 2 months now?
I probally should see a doc about this but i thought id ask if anyone else on here has had simlar pain….it started as a burning sensation on the back of my left ankle, and has left me with a dull ache, not all the time but when i get up in the morning and stand on it, it hurts…or if ive been lying down for a while then stand up it hurts. Sometimes when i go to bed i get the burning sensation again, its only on my left ankel at the back and it comes and goes……any ideas on what this could be?

    • ANSWER:
      Several possibilities:

Tendinitis or some other form of ligament damage.

A spur on the heel bone.

Faciitis of the heel (requires a cortisone injection in the heel to relieve the pain)

You do need to see a Doctor.
