My Ankle Bone Hurts

Five Reasons High Heels Can Hurt You
Over the years, high heeled shoes continue to be a popular fashion trend. So popular, it is causing some women to surgically alter their feet in order to fit into them. Even without this, there are health risks associated with wearing high heels.

1. A high heeled shoe forces the posture into an unnatural position that significantly stresses the joints. The spine, which in flat shoes is reasonably straight, forms more of an ‘S’ shape with the chest and lower back pushing forward and the hips pushed back. The height of the heel also changes the amount of weight on the forefoot. A 1-inch heel will increase the pressure by 22%; a 2-inch heel by 57%; and a 3-inch heel by 76%. This increased pressure puts the forefoot at risk for injuries such as stress fractures, bunions, and hammertoes.

2. Knee pain is common when high heels are involved. The heel height causes increased strain on the knee joint and associated tendons. The quadriceps muscle group in the front of the thigh works harder, increasing pressure on the kneecap by up to 26%. This can ultimately increase the incidence of osteoarthritis of the knee and quadriceps tendinitis.

3. Because of the constant elevation of the heel, contraction and shortening of the calf muscles and Achilles tendon may occur. Habitual wearing of extremely high heels can cause a woman to be unable to tolerate a flat shoe. On occasion, this can even require surgery to lengthen the Achilles tendon. Most often, however, this will increase the chances of Achilles tendinitis or shin splints. 4. The changes in posture and overall imbalance will lead to instability when walking and a resulting risk of ankle sprains. High heels, especially stilettos, will lead to instability and a major increase in ankle sprains result. An ankle sprain is caused from the twisting of the ankle and results in a tear of the ligaments that connect the foot and leg bones and stabilize the ankle. When the heel is balancing on a narrow stiletto heel, if the heel shifts outward slightly a sudden twist may occur to sprain these ligaments. Swelling, bruising and pain will result. At worst, it is possible for the ankle to fracture, a ligament can pull a piece of bone off, or even a bone in the foot can break due to the pull of a tendon.

5. High heels are enjoyed by most women because they are “cute.” They are narrow and are contoured to make the foot look slender. The tight fit of many heels will force the toes to conform to its shape. The added pressure on the toes can exacerbate bunions and hammertoes. The pressure of the shoe itself can cause corns to form. Furthermore. The compression of the metatarsal bones can cause pressure on the nerves that run between them. A Morton’s neuroma, which is a growth and inflammation of the nerve, can form due to the pressure. Remember, a shoe is meant to fit the foot, not squeeze it relentlessly.

While the overall percentage of women wearing high heels daily has decreased, the percentage reporting physical problems from wearing them has increased. This is likely due to the newer styles that have been introduced. Some have no choice but to wear the shoes for work, however comfort is a priority. Pain should not be a price for style. Be sure to always wear a shoe that is right for your foot. If pain persists, be sure and visit your podiatrist.

You may have just bruised it, or stretched or torn a tendon. If it’s your left foot it’s the post tibial tendon or it could possibly be Achilles Tendonitis.

I suggest going to a podiatrist & getting it x-rayed.
If something is wrong ask for prescription for physical therapy where they can do ultrasound & teach you stretching exercises.
      After exercise, always use ice.
Try Aleve or Advil to reduce soreness & inflammation.

    my ankle bone hurts! help?
hi..so about 6 years ago when i was 14, i sprained both of my ankles. not at the same time though. so when i sprained my left one..they took me to my moms friend who said that she could make it heal faster..i dont know. so she got my foot and she was mooving it around and pushing it in and out..it hurt so bad but the pain eventually went away..it would still hurt a little bit though. then it healed..then later in the year, i sprained my right foot when i was outside playing. i just kept it immobilized and i would sometimes walk on it while it was healing. After the both healed, i started getting pains in my ankle bones. it mostly happens when its cold and the bones hurt really bad. its the straight out bone. For as long as i can remember, it happens once or twice a year. about 3 weeks ago, my right foot was hurting..now tonight its my left ankle. the pain sometimes runs from my ankle, all the way up almost to my knee. sometimes the pain gets really bad that it makes me cry. What do you think it could be? i never really went to see a doctor, as i do is rub on some bengay type of thing and wrap those material bandage things around it to immobilize it. the pain feels really dull or achy..and its the bone.

    thanks :]

i had this pain but it was in my big toe. i broke it when i was younger and i started to get pains in it when the weather is cold.. the doc told me it was arthritis. nothing to worry about really just try to keep the joint warm and keep moving it so it doesn’t seize up. also try wrapping it in a bandage soaked in some water that has had ginger root in it. that really helps. all you do it get fresh ginger root and boil it then let the water cool off a little and then soak a bandage in it and wrap around your ankle.hope you feel better soon.

    • ANSWER:
It’s not the bone that hurts it’s the muscles. Since I don’t know where the pain is located all I can tell you is to push in on the pain or right next to it and hold the pressure there for 30 seconds. Then make the muscle move in some way and release the pressure but hold the foot in that spot for another 30 seconds. If it had been in the front tendons this would have been what I would have sent you to do:
      Front tendon:
With the leg pulled up into your lap, take the arm on the same side as the leg and wrap it around the leg just above ankle height, thumb behind the leg and fingers round the front. As your fingers go around the front and rest on your leg, they should feel the big bone down the front. When you put your fingers over the front of it and you wiggle your foot, you should feel the tendon right next to the bone. Press your fingers on it and hold. Take your other hand and bring it in from under your leg. Place your fingers so they go away from the ones already there positioning them more away from you. Again if you wiggle your foot you will find the other tendons that have to be released. Press hard on all of them and hold. Relax take a deep breath and exhale and don’t tense up any part of your body. After 30 seconds, slowly lower your foot as far as it will go. Remove the pressure but hold your foot there for one minute longer.
It might still give you some help if the rest fails.

  18. QUESTION:
Sprained my ankle, bone protrusion, hurts every time I run excessively?
I sprained my ankle about two months ago. There is this bone protrusion just above my arch – below my ankle bone and a little to the right, on my left foot. This bone and under it will hurt whenever I run excessively. I’m not sure if the bone is protruding because I fell, because my other foot has it as well. Anyway, I’ve been to many GP’s but they all just say it’s just strain caused by my flat foot. It’s a little strange that the BONE should hurt, but I am guessing it isn’t a fracture or anything of the sort because I can still walk/limp. Does anyone know what this is and also what the bone is called?

    Thanks. (:

    • ANSWER:
The bone could quite possibly be your Navicular from your description of its location. After 2 months the majority of your sprain should be healed. I doubt it is a heel spur.
The fact that it only seems to be a bother after Excessive running…it may simply be some left over scar tissue or simply a sign you need better arch support from your running shoe.
If you still are suffering…I suggest a visit to a chiropractor who deals with sports injuries (sprains are quite common), since the MD’s have yet to help.

  19. QUESTION:
If you touch a bone and it hurts because of a sprain or strain, does that usually mean its broken?

not necessarily but it would probubly be best if you got it looked at by a doctor.

  20. QUESTION:
Very tiny knot/bruise by ankle bone that hurt?
I am pretty sure it is nothing, but I thought I’d ask opinions to make sure. Due to my clumsiness I fell and hit my desk chair. My ankle hurt and I gave it no thought. A few hours later I notice that it is sore. I look and see a slight blue bruise not even the size of an M&M. I feel it and notice that not only does it hurt like hell, but it feels a bit like a knot. It is located right by the ankle bone and hurts a bit when I walk. Should I be concerned? I haven’t gotten a bruise like this before so I want to check.

    • ANSWER:
You just have a bruise which is blood buildup just beneath the skin. Where you hit your foot has very little skin and so you may have also bruised the ankle bone. If it has been over twenty four hours, start applying moist heat. Just take a small hand towel, soak it with hot water ring it out a lay it across the ankle or clear around. Have a second towel handy to quickly replace the first one when it begins to cool. Do this until the skin begins to turn slightly red, then massage it and apply some Aspercreme all over the ankle. Your body will eventually absorb the blood, the heat helps that process along. You’ll be fine in a couple of days. Wishing you the very best young lady and good luck.

  21. QUESTION:
Whenever I stand up straight after kneeling down/crouching the outside area of my leg between knee/ankle hurts?
The bone itself hurts as if there’s a lot of stress on it; basically the entire part of my leg between my knee and ankle, on the side, where the soleus muscle is. Is there any reason for this? I only notice this when I get up after kneeling down or bending over.
Sorry Gillian you’re wrong, but I guess you couldn’t have known that just by me asking this question so I guess I should clarify that it’s not because of poor stretching or anything, and it’s the BONE that hurts not the MUSCLE. thanks

    • ANSWER:
You have tight calf muscles. Your muscles have gradually tightened up over a period of months through poor stretching. So get the right stretches and do them. Best of Luck

If you feel pain in your ankle, rest it for several days. Try NOT to move the affected area.
If your ankle is unstable, support it, especially during standing or walking. ACE bandages work well. If this does not provide enough support, you may need to be fit for a brace. Crutches or a cane can help take the weight off a sore or unsteady ankle.
Once you have healed adequately, you can start exercises to strengthen your ankle and avoid injury in the future

out if a sprain and a broken bone which one hurts more?
ok i Just hurt my ankle. The Doctor said it was a 3rd degree sprain which is the worse sprain there is…i was wondering if my sprained ankle hurts as much as a broken bone….or worse?

    • ANSWER:
      Ooooh…grade 3 sprain…ouch!
It really depends on what bone you broke. A sprain hurts pretty bad & you’ll most likely feel diffused spread out pain. With a break though you could either feel intense I” wish my leg was cut off” pain or a milder ache in your bone. I broke the metatarsal in my foot very small bone but it ached through my entire leg up into my thigh, within the bone.
With some sprains though you could have an underlying fracture that was not picked up on x-ray…so you could be feeling double pain!

Hope that helps but it really does depend what bone you break.

  35. QUESTION:
My ankle hurts really really bad?
When I was walking down the stairs a couple hours ago,my ankle bone randomly started to hurt.I thought it was no big deal and continued to walk. But then I felt intense pain and now I have a mueller knee strap wrapped tightly around it.It’s not helping, but I thought it would. When I put pressure on it,it hurts like crap.My mom isn’t home and I think I might need crutches. Is it sprained,or what?

    • ANSWER:
It might be sprained, but if it was sudden pain with no injury it might be something else. Until your mom gets home use the RICE treatment:

      R.I.C.E. stands for:

Rest – The individual is advised to rest the ankle from weight-bearing activities allowing the swelling to settle.
Ice – Placing a cold compress or ice pack on the ankle is helpful in controlling inflammation as well as helping to reduce pain.
Compression – Utilizing an ace wrap for compression around the ankle is beneficial to control the swelling.
Elevation – Lying down with the leg elevated higher than the level of the chest is helpful in controlling and reducing swelling.

I went to the hospital with sever swelling from a few inches above my ankle bone to just before my toes and on the inside of my ankle. The x-rays were negative and they scheduled an appt. at the orthopedist tomorrow. Does it make sense why the inside of my ankle hurts when i walk under my ankle bone?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, it could be a sprain, strain, torn ligaments, etc. Swelling and pain go hand in hand. If you sprained your ankle, there would be no fracture of the bone shown in the xray. But the doctor could order an MRI to show the soft tissue of the area and see if there is any damnage. Ligaments in your ankle extend down and attach to your the bottom of your foot.

  39. QUESTION:
    Large lump underneath ankle bone?
ive got a large lump underneath my ankle bone. it hurts when i walk most of the times. my ankle has been hurting for a week but ive only noticed the lump. it looks like swelling but is semi hard.around 3cm long.

    • ANSWER:
You did some kind of damage that needs taken care of. Get an ace (elastic) bandage and wrap it for support. If you are a young person, show your parents because you need an x-ray on this ankle soon. Telling your parents is important because you need your ankle to be strong for about 70 more years so take care of it now.

  41. QUESTION:
Why does the inside top part of my ankle hurt?
So i sprained my ankle about 2 months ago, i didnt let it heal all the way, but i let it heal to the point where i can walk on it without pain and do some activitys without pain, but i resprained it riding my bike, so i took about 4 weeks off and rested it and wore an aircast. after the 4 weeks my ankle didnt feel 100% so i was resting for about 3 more weeks, and i let it heal pretty good, id say about 85-90%. And both times i sprained it i had an inversion sprain. after it was about 85-90% healed i played a soccer game, it felt pretty good. But after the soccer game the inside of my ankle hurts now which is really wierd. I didnt do anything to hurt the inside of my ankle so i was wondering what it was. If anyone can help me that would be greatly appreciated.
The pain just came out of no where, i can walk normally and it doesnt hurt. but when i bend it down then to the left it hurts like i sprained it, it doesnt hurt really bad but it hurts. The inversion sprained i had 7 weeks before feels good now but the inside of my ankle hurts now so can someone help me please?

And by the way i rested my ankle for 7 weeks after the second time i sprained it and went to the doctor, he said my ankle is looking pretty good and that i cant start riding my BMX bike again, he gave me a very supportive brace that he said i should wear for a couple of weeks.

So my question is why does the inside of my ankle hurt now? i didnt feel any pain when it happend, it just came out of no where i am thinking. and how can i heal it asap?

The pain is around the inside ankle bone. It is the side of the ankle bone closest to the foot that hurts.
    Can someone please help me.

how come my ankle hurts really bad with a broken toe?
i broke my toe about 3 weeks ago (i know i broke cuz i went to the doctor) he gave some sort of wierd shoe and i broke it more by my foot. its still bruised really bad. i have benn walking with my ankle twisted in ward and now my ankle hurts really bad. it is also very swollen above the bone. does my ankle hurt because of how im walking? btw i cant go to the doctor again cuz my mom wont take my til my doctors appointment is september..

    • ANSWER:
Inflamation causes pain due to the stretching of the swollen tissues. According to you and for whatever reason, your ankle is also swollen, so that is why it hurts. I’m assuming your doctor prescribed anti-inflamatory meds for your injury, but it’s been 3 weeks since your accident..,so you may be out of medication. If your mother won’t take you to your doctor, take anti-inflamation meds such as tylenol, ibuprofen, aspirin, or whatever you take for fever or pain. I hope your mother changes her mind and listens to you.
      Good luck..!

  43. QUESTION:
Does anybody on here know anything about ankles and orthotics?
I got some custom made orthotics about five years ago. I wore them for a couple years then quit, and started wearing memory foam insoles because it was so hard to find shoes to fit the custom made ones. But now I see I need more than memory foam, so I have tried to go back to the custom made ones, but my inner ankle bone hurts, and my ankle swels up just over my heel when I wear them. It’s been well over a month. Any ideas what’s wrong?

    • ANSWER:
If they were made 5 years ago, they may not be the right size or fit for you anymore. Sounds like there may be some constriction, causing the swelling. The first thing that comes to mind is that they are just not fitting right anymore, which could be cause in 5 years you could gain or lose weight, have children (which can change the size of feet), or other physical changes.

If they really helped you, you should just get a new pair, it would be worth it ;)

  44. QUESTION:
The side of my leg by my ankle hurts. why?
I’m a soccer player but I don’t remember actually hurting my ankle. I get pain whenever running and it lasts for a couple of days on the side of my lower leg. It hurts by the bone thats right by the ankle but its not the actual bone that hurts. It feels like a muscle or something. Its been like this for quite some time now. I’m not sure what it could be.

    • ANSWER:
i got that too sometimes (i played soccer for a long time), sometimes it was as simple as my shin guards sitting weird on the bottom of my foot. I would suggest you make sure your cleats support your arch, and also stretch your ankle by rolling it around(but dont stand on it then), to help ease the tension. i never iced mine, but you might wanna try it. Also you might wanna take a pain reliever right before practice or a game, just to take the edge off.

With sprained ankles, you shouldn’t be putting any pressure on it for a week or two; you should be on crutches. Apart from this, it is completely normal for this to happen.
